Akagera National Park

Akagera sits in eastern Rwanda, bordering Tanzania along its eastern edge. Rolling savannahs, glittering lakes, and dense woodland shape its spectacular landscape. Above all, it tells one of Africa’s most powerful wildlife recovery stories.

Poaching and encroachment once pushed the park dangerously close to collapse. However, Rwanda partnered with African Parks in 2010 to reverse the damage. Together, they successfully restored lions, elephants, and rhinos to their natural home.

Today, Akagera proudly holds all five Big Five animals within its boundaries. Furthermore, it protects over 500 bird species across wetlands, savannah, and forest. Consequently, it stands firmly as Rwanda’s premier safari destination.

Akagera lies roughly 2.5 hours east of Kigali by road. The southern gate near Kayonza serves as the main entry point. Additionally, the scenic drive passes through stunning Rwandan hills and quiet rural villages.

You can hire a private vehicle or join an organised tour from Kigali. Both options give you flexible access to the park’s top highlights. Either way, arriving early in the morning maximises your wildlife viewing opportunities.

Things to Do in Akagera

1. Game Drives

Game drives deliver Akagera’s most heart-pounding wildlife moments without question. Knowledgeable guides lead you across open savannah at dawn and dusk. There, lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos roam freely together.

Beyond the Big Five, zebras gallop across grasslands in spectacular striped herds. Giraffes stretch elegantly toward acacia treetops along every trail. Additionally, kobs and impalas bound through the woodland with effortless grace.

Morning drives offer the highest chance of spotting predators in action. Cool temperatures keep animals alert and moving toward waterholes early. Consequently, dawn game drives consistently produce the most exciting wildlife encounters.

Afternoon drives bring equally thrilling rewards as the golden hour approaches. Sunset light transforms the savannah into a breathtaking golden canvas. Meanwhile, nocturnal creatures begin stirring, adding extra excitement to the experience.

2. Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema

A boat cruise along Lake Ihema completely transforms your Akagera experience. Enormous hippos yawn, splash, and grunt just metres from the boat. Furthermore, Nile crocodiles sprawl on muddy banks in complete motionless stillness.

Water birds absolutely steal the show throughout every single cruise. African fish eagles swoop powerfully into the lake to snatch fish. Herons, kingfishers, and cormorants then perch on papyrus reeds above the waterline.

The cruise typically covers two hours of peaceful shoreline exploration. Guides narrate animal behaviour as you drift quietly through calm waters. Above all, the scenery — still reflections, golden reeds, open skies — is extraordinary.

3. Birding

Akagera shelters over 500 recorded bird species across its varied habitats. Birders travel from around the world specifically to experience this. Notably, the rare shoebill stork makes its home in the park’s wetlands.

Lakeside marshes attract waders, waterfowl, and dozens of colourful water species. The open savannah simultaneously hosts raptors, rollers, and bee-eaters in abundance. Every zone rewards patient birders with genuinely unique and memorable sightings.

Early mornings offer the richest birding activity across the entire park. Move slowly, carry binoculars, and explore different habitats for best results. Ultimately, Akagera’s birdlife alone makes the entire Rwanda trip worthwhile.
