Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park sits in western Uganda, roughly 228 kilometres from Kampala. It covers about 370 square kilometres of savanna, woodland, and shimmering lakes. Five lakes spread across the park, giving it a truly unique character. Unlike larger Ugandan parks, Lake Mburo feels refreshingly intimate and uncrowded. Over 350 bird species and dozens of mammals call this park home. Notably, it is the only Ugandan park where zebras and elands share the same landscape.

Getting There

Driving from Kampala takes roughly three to four hours via Masaka and Mbarara. The road stays paved and manageable throughout the entire journey. Most visitors hire private cars or join organised guided tours. Alternatively, public buses drop passengers at Lyantonde or Sanga gate. From either point, boda bodas connect easily to the park entrance. The ideal travel months run from June to September and December to February.

Things to Do in Lake Mburo National Park

1. Game Drives

Game drives deliver the park’s most thrilling and rewarding wildlife encounters. Morning and evening drives consistently produce the richest animal sightings. Zebras roam across open grasslands in large, eye-catching herds. Giraffes browse tall acacia trees with effortless grace and height. Furthermore, topis and elands graze calmly across wide, sunlit plains. Impalas and kobs appear frequently along every dusty game track. Skilled guides identify and explain animal behaviour throughout each drive. Most drives last two to three hours, covering all key wildlife zones.

2. Boat Cruise

A boat cruise on Lake Mburo offers a completely different wildlife experience. The lake bursts with hippos, crocodiles, and colourful water birds. Passengers float remarkably close to hippos in total safety. African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers line the shoreline in abundance. Moreover, the evening sunset cruise paints the sky in brilliant orange tones. Guides share fascinating stories about the lake’s ecology and animal life. Cruises typically last one to two hours, departing from Rwonyo Camp.

3. Nature Walks

Nature walks bring visitors face to face with the park’s finer details. An armed ranger leads every walk, ensuring complete safety throughout. Walkers spot smaller animals, fascinating insects, and plants missed on drives. Thorny bushes, giant fig trees, and wildflowers line every trail beautifully. Additionally, birders love this activity since countless species hide inside thick vegetation. The salt lick area draws buffaloes and other mammals in close range. Walks range from a relaxed one hour to a rewarding half-day adventure.

4. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding offers a surprisingly quiet and thrilling way to explore. Horses move silently, allowing riders to approach wildlife with ease. Zebras, impalas, and warthogs barely notice the gentle, approaching horses. Both beginners and experienced riders join guided horseback safaris comfortably. Expert guides from Mihingo Lodge lead all rides with patience and care. Consequently, horseback riding has grown into one of the park’s most beloved activities. Each ride lasts about two hours across scenic, open terrain.

5. Cycling

Cycling through Lake Mburo gives adventurers an active and immersive safari. Riders pedal through grasslands and woodland trails at a comfortable pace. Mountain bikes are available for hire directly within the park. A ranger always accompanies every cyclist for safety and wildlife guidance. Impalas, zebras, and colourful birds appear constantly around every bend. In addition, cycling lets visitors absorb the park’s fresh air and natural sounds. Most cycling sessions last between one and three enjoyable hours.
