Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 : Arrival in Kinshasa

Your adventure starts when our professional guide meets you at the N’Djili International Airport located in Kinshasa city. We will transport you directly to your hotel to settle into your room and relax after your long flight. Our staff will then provide a detailed briefing about the upcoming trekking schedule and essential safety rules for travel. You will spend your first night resting comfortably at the Léon Hotel or another similar high-quality local lodging option. This evening allows you to adjust to the tropical climate and prepare your gear for the early morning departure. Please ensure your camera batteries are fully charged because the next few days will offer many incredible photo opportunities.

Day 02 : River Travel to the Forest

We begin the second day by heading to a private port to board a ferry for the Tshumbiri region. You will spend between 4 and 12 hours navigating the massive Congo River while watching the busy local traffic. This boat trip offers a unique look at how river people live and work on the water every single day. You will reach the port around 6:00 p.m. and quickly move your luggage into a waiting private off-road jeep. We will drive through the darkening landscape for two hours to reach the village of Nkala by 8:00 p.m. Our team will set up your tent so you can enjoy a quiet night under the bright African stars.

Day 03 : Searching for Wild Bonobos

You must wake up at 5:00 a.m. to start the trek while the forest animals are most active today. Carry your breakfast into the woods so you can eat while listening to the morning sounds of the deep jungle. Our expert trackers will lead you through the trees to find the elusive bonobos living in their wild habitat. You will watch these intelligent creatures play and eat before returning to the main village around 12:00 p.m. After a hot lunch, we will visit the local chief and walk through the village to meet Téké families. At 4:30 p.m., the community will perform the traditional Ekoul Balow dance show for your group to enjoy together.

Day 04 : Culture and Nature Walks

The fourth morning involves a peaceful walk through the forest to learn about local plants used for traditional medicine. You will spend time with the Téké people to understand their ancient history and their deep connection to nature. These villagers have lived alongside the bonobos for centuries and hold much wisdom regarding the conservation of the forest. We will enjoy a final lunch in the village before starting the journey back toward the port of Tshumbiri. You will spend the night in a simple guesthouse or a sturdy tent near the edge of the river. This transition day helps you reflect on the wildlife encounters before we return to the busy life of Kinshasa.

Day 05 : Returning to Kinshasa City

We leave the Nkala area at 6:00 a.m. to catch the ferry that departs from the docks of Tshumbiri. You will eat a fresh breakfast on the boat while watching the sunrise over the wide and muddy river waters. The return trip allows you to see different birds and fishing villages that line the banks of the river. We expect to arrive at the Maluku port around 4:30 p.m. to meet our city driver for the transfer. You will say goodbye to the boat crew and travel back to the comfort of your downtown city hotel. The evening is yours to spend relaxing or eating at one of the many great restaurants in the area.

Day 06 : Exploring the Vibrant Streets

Our city tour explores the rich history of Kinshasa by visiting several famous landmarks and the large central market. You will visit the National Museum to see ancient art and the solemn mausoleum of the former leader Laurent Kabila. We will also stop at the Place of Independence to learn about the struggle for freedom from colonial rule. A highlight of the day is meeting the famous Sapeurs who represent the Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People. These Congolese Dandies wear very expensive designer suits and colorful accessories to express their unique sense of high fashion. You will travel in a safe private vehicle while your guide explains the complex social traditions of the city.

Day 07 : Final Journey to Airport

The final morning of your trip is reserved for last-minute souvenir shopping or enjoying a slow breakfast at hotel. Our driver will arrive at the scheduled time to take you back to the N’Djili International Airport for flight. We will assist you with your luggage and ensure you reach the check-in counter with plenty of extra time. This concludes your seven-day tour of the Congo where you experienced both the wild forest and the urban life. You leave with many stories about the bonobos and the stylish people who make this country so very special. We hope you enjoyed this immersive look at one of the most diverse nations on the African continent.
