Choosing the best lodges inKidepo Valley National Park is less about finding the largest number of hotels and more about choosing the right base for your safari. Kidepo is remote and accommodation is limited compared with Uganda’s more frequently visited parks. That makes location particularly important.
For most travellers we recommend deciding first whether you want to stay inside the park for maximum safari time or stay just outside the boundary for a wider choice of prices and accommodation styles. Apoka Safari Lodge and Apoka Rest Camp are inside the park while Kidepo Savannah Lodge and several newer properties are positioned close to the gates.
The landscape also matters. Much of the most reliable dry-season wildlife viewing takes place around the Narus Valley because its remaining water attracts animals. Staying around Apoka or the southern park boundary therefore makes practical sense for travellers whose priority is game viewing. Uganda Wildlife Authority describes Kidepo as a 1,442-square-kilometre protected area with elevations ranging from about 914 to 2,750 metres.
| Lodge or camp | Location | Style | Best for | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apoka Safari Lodge | Inside Kidepo | Luxury | Luxury travellers | Excellent in-park location overlooking Narus Valley |
| Kidepo Wilderness Lodge | Near Kalokudo Gate | Luxury / upper-mid-range | Travellers wanting comfort near the park | Modern accommodation close to the park |
| Kidepo Savannah Lodge | About 500 m from Kalokudo Gate | Mid-range / budget | Couples and value-conscious travellers | Good balance of comfort, views and location |
| Namoni Lodge | Community conservancy near Nataba Gate | Mid-range | Responsible travellers and families | Community-conservation model |
| Mara Safari Lodge Kidepo | About 1 km from Kalokudo Gate | Mid-range | Travellers wanting a comfortable independent lodge | Close to the park with local character |
| Adere Safari Lodge | On the edge of Kidepo | Mid-range | Travellers wanting spacious cottages | Views and Karamojong-inspired setting |
| Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp | Near Katarum Gate | Mid-range / bush camp | Adventurous safari travellers | Simple wilderness atmosphere |
| Apoka Rest Camp | Inside the park | Budget / basic | Budget travellers | One of the most practical ways to sleep inside Kidepo |
| Designated campsites | Inside the park | Camping | Experienced campers | Lowest-cost in-park option |
Apoka Safari Lodge remains the standout choice for travellers who want a high-comfort safari without sacrificing access to the wilderness.
The lodge sits on a rocky kopje overlooking the Narus Valley and has 10 chalets. Its elevated position gives guests broad views across the surrounding savannah while its location inside Kidepo reduces the amount of driving needed to reach the park’s wildlife areas. Current lodge information describes six double chalets and four twin chalets with private verandas plus a swimming pool built into the rock.
The major advantage is not simply the quality of the rooms. It is time.
A traveller staying outside the park has to factor in the journey to a gate before entering the wildlife area. At Apoka you are already inside the protected area. That becomes especially useful when planning early morning drives when animals are generally more active.
The lodge’s current published information indicates that its accommodation package can include full board, selected drinks, accommodation and scheduled game activities while park entrance fees and certain specialist activities remain separate. Always request a current quotation because lodge inclusions and rates can change.
Best for: honeymooners, luxury safari travellers, photographers and travellers who value convenience.
Our recommendation: Choose Apoka if your budget allows and wildlife time is more important than saving on accommodation.
Kidepo Wilderness Lodge is a newer accommodation option close to Kalokudo Gate. Current 2026 travel-industry information describes the property as having 16 self-contained chalets with private verandas plus family accommodation, a swimming pool and restaurant.
Its position is particularly useful for travellers who want a comfortable lodge while remaining close to the southern part of Kidepo. The property is associated with Crystal Lodges Uganda which currently lists Kidepo Wilderness Lodge among its properties.
Because this is a relatively new property compared with established Kidepo names, travellers should confirm the latest room configuration, meal plan, transfer arrangements and activity inclusions directly before paying a deposit.
Best for: couples, families and travellers looking for a newer premium property outside the park boundary.
Our recommendation: This is worth considering when Apoka is unavailable or when you prefer a newer lodge close to Kalokudo Gate.
Kidepo Savannah Lodge is one of the most practical choices for travellers who want comfortable accommodation without moving into the luxury price bracket.
The lodge is approximately 500 metres from Kalokudo Gate and overlooks the Narus Valley and surrounding mountain landscape. Accommodation includes self-contained safari tents as well as simpler “lazy camping” tents.
That combination makes it particularly useful for mixed-budget safaris. One couple might choose a comfortable self-contained tent while a younger or more budget-conscious traveller can choose a simpler camping-style option.
The lodge also organizes morning and afternoon game drives in an open-roof extended Land Cruiser. Its published 2026 activity rates list half-day and full-day game drives separately from park entrance fees and professional ranger charges.
Another advantage is that guests can stay outside the park boundary and only pay park entry when entering for activities. This can make the overall accommodation budget easier to control.
Best for: mid-range travellers, couples, small groups and travellers who want value without giving up the safari atmosphere.
Our recommendation: For many travellers this is the best compromise between location, comfort and price.
Namoni Lodge is a particularly interesting addition to the Kidepo accommodation scene because it operates on a community conservancy bordering the national park.
The lodge currently offers 10 self-contained tented safari cabins with private verandas and savannah views. It is outside the national park boundary near Nataba Gate which means guests do not pay park entrance simply for sleeping at the lodge. The property states that 10% of every guest night supports community conservation projects.
For travellers interested in combining wildlife with community tourism this is an appealing option. The lodge can arrange game drives and guided nature walks inside the park alongside hiking and cultural experiences outside it.
Namoni is also currently advertising an opening offer for stays between August and December 2026 with bed-and-breakfast rates of US$110 for single occupancy and US$130 for double occupancy. These are promotional rates rather than a permanent price guarantee so they should be reconfirmed before booking.
Best for: responsible travellers, families, couples and visitors who want accommodation linked to community conservation.
Our recommendation: Consider Namoni if your itinerary includes the Nataba side of Kidepo or if supporting local conservation is important to you.
Mara Safari Lodge Kidepo is located close to Kalokudo Gate. The lodge’s own information places it about 1 kilometre from the park entrance.
Its accommodation currently includes standard rooms and a family cottage. The published accommodation page lists US$120 for a single room, US$200 for a double room and US$320 for a family cottage. Because these are provider-published prices they should be treated as current reference rates rather than guaranteed safari package prices.
The lodge also offers game drives, nature walks, birding, hiking, sundowners and bush dining. Its close location to the park makes it practical for travellers who want a relatively straightforward base without staying inside the park.
Mara Safari Lodge is also listed in Uganda Tourism Board’s accommodation licensing database under Mara Safari Lodge Limited.
Best for: mid-range travellers, families and private groups.
Our recommendation: It is a useful alternative when the more established lodges are full.
Adere Safari Lodge is positioned on the edge of Kidepo Valley National Park and offers 20 self-contained safari cottages according to the property’s current information. The design incorporates Karamojong-inspired elements while the lodge also offers community experiences and views across the surrounding wilderness.
For travellers who want a relatively spacious property with more room capacity than some of the smaller camps this can be useful for family groups or larger safari parties.
The lodge also promotes visits to Karamojong communities and other cultural experiences. These activities can complement game drives by giving travellers a better understanding of the people and landscapes surrounding the park.
Best for: families, groups and travellers interested in combining wildlife with cultural experiences.
Recommendation: Confirm the lodge’s current operating status, room availability and package inclusions before finalizing your itinerary because accommodation operations in remote Kidepo can change.
Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp is another accommodation option outside the park. It is positioned near Katarum Gate and is better suited to travellers who prefer a simpler bush setting rather than a conventional luxury lodge.
Its location can work well when your safari itinerary uses the Katarum side of the park. However the choice between Katarum and Kalokudo should be made according to the route and activities planned rather than simply choosing the lodge with the lowest advertised room rate.
Best for: adventurous travellers, small groups and visitors who prefer a wilderness-camp atmosphere.
Recommendation: Ask your safari operator about current operations and road access before booking since conditions around remote Kidepo can affect practical transfer times.
For travellers who want the biggest advantage of all — sleeping inside the national park without paying for a luxury lodge — Apoka Rest Camp deserves serious consideration.
The facility is operated by Uganda Wildlife Authority and provides basic accommodation at the park headquarters area. Current accommodation information describes self-contained huts alongside simpler bandas with shared facilities.
The rooms are basic compared with Apoka Safari Lodge. That is exactly why many budget-conscious safari travellers choose it.
You are paying primarily for location rather than luxury.
Staying inside the park can make early morning game drives easier and reduces the need for an additional transfer from an external lodge before entering the park. This can be particularly valuable during the dry season when wildlife is concentrated around water sources.
Food arrangements should be confirmed in advance. Remote parks do not offer the same supply infrastructure as Kampala or the more developed safari circuits.
Best for: budget travellers, researchers, photographers and adventurous safari visitors.
Our recommendation: If accommodation budget is limited but you want maximum access to the park then Apoka Rest Camp is one of the most logical choices.
Camping is another option for travellers who are comfortable with basic wilderness conditions.
Uganda Wildlife Authority’s management documentation recognizes designated camping areas and visitor facilities within the park. Current Kidepo accommodation information identifies designated sites including Kakine.
Camping should not be treated like ordinary roadside camping. Kidepo is a genuine wildlife area so visitors need to use designated sites and follow instructions from park authorities.
Bring appropriate camping equipment and arrange your site in advance. Food storage, water availability, sanitation and security should all be discussed with your safari operator or UWA before arrival.
Best for: experienced campers and travellers seeking a more basic wilderness experience.
The right lodge depends mainly on your safari priorities.
Staying inside the park is especially useful when your itinerary revolves around early morning and late afternoon wildlife viewing. You can reduce transfer time and spend more of your safari day in the park.
This is our preferred direction for travellers who want a comfortable safari without paying luxury-lodge rates. Its proximity to Kalokudo Gate is a major practical advantage.
Travellers who prefer a newer property with modern facilities should consider it while confirming current rates and inclusions.
Namoni is particularly attractive if you want your accommodation choice to contribute directly to community conservation.
The accommodation is basic but the location is difficult to beat for the price.
Mara is worth considering when you want a comfortable independent property close to Kalokudo Gate.
Kidepo’s remoteness changes how accommodation should be evaluated.
In a more compact safari destination it may not matter much whether your lodge is 10 or 20 minutes from the park. In Kidepo the location can influence the amount of time you spend travelling between accommodation and wildlife areas.
The Narus Valley is particularly important during dry periods because permanent water in the southern part of the park attracts wildlife. UWA notes that wildlife and tourism infrastructure are concentrated around the southern Narus Valley near Apoka.
That does not mean every animal will be in Narus Valley. Wildlife moves according to water, food, temperature and seasonal conditions. Nevertheless a lodge that gives you efficient access to this area can be a sensible choice during the dry season.
Kidepo is a year-round safari destination but accommodation choice becomes especially important during the drier periods.
During drier conditions animals increasingly depend on remaining water sources. Narus Valley can therefore become an important wildlife-viewing area.
This is when staying close to the southern park sector can offer a practical advantage. Early morning drives should be prioritized because temperatures are cooler and predators can remain active before the heat increases.
The wetter months can produce greener landscapes, dramatic skies and excellent photographic conditions. Birdwatching can also become particularly rewarding because seasonal conditions influence bird activity and vegetation.
On the other hand some tracks can become more challenging after heavy rain. Travellers driving into Kidepo should therefore allow flexibility rather than planning every transfer to the minute.
Kidepo has fewer beds than Uganda’s larger safari destinations. Once a preferred lodge is full there may not be another equivalent property nearby.
For this reason we recommend securing accommodation early for Christmas, New Year and other high-demand travel periods.
There is no single Kidepo accommodation price because rates depend on the lodge, room type, meal plan, season and whether activities or transfers are included.
Some current examples illustrate the spread:
These examples should not be used as a substitute for a safari quotation. Remote-lodge prices can change and package inclusions vary significantly.
Usually you should not assume that park entrance fees are included in the accommodation rate.
The most recent UWA conservation tariff covering July 2024 through June 2026 listed Kidepo entry at US$40 per 24 hours for foreign non-residents, US$30 for foreign residents and UGX 20,000 for East African citizens. The same tariff separately listed day game drives, night game drives and other activities.
That tariff expired at the end of June 2026. Since this article is being prepared in August 2026 we recommend confirming the current UWA tariff before quoting a safari because we could not independently verify a newer official tariff online
Your accommodation decision should be made alongside your transport plan.
For many international visitors the most convenient option is a domestic flight from Entebbe to Kidepo.
AeroLink currently lists Kidepo Valley National Park among its scheduled destinations from Entebbe.
Flying is particularly sensible when your itinerary includes several other Ugandan parks. It can save a substantial amount of road travel and allows you to spend more of your holiday on safari.
Before booking a lodge ask who provides the airstrip transfer. Some properties organize transfers while others require the transfer to be arranged separately.
Kidepo can also be reached by road. UWA identifies a direct route through Gulu to Lokumoit Gate and notes that the journey can be broken with an overnight stop at places such as Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Gulu or Kitgum. Longer routes can pass through Karamoja.
For a road safari we normally recommend avoiding an itinerary that treats Kampala-Kidepo as a simple point-to-point transfer. The distance is significant and the journey itself can become part of the safari.
A well-planned route might include an overnight stop in northern Uganda or another wildlife destination before continuing north.
Kidepo is one of Uganda’s most distinctive wildlife destinations because it contains species and habitats not commonly encountered elsewhere in the country’s national parks.
UWA records species including cheetah, striped hyena, caracal, greater and lesser kudu, eland, Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant, lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The park also supports more than 475 bird species according to UWA’s park information and management documentation.
One of Kidepo’s major attractions is its dry-country wildlife. The park is particularly valuable for travellers interested in species such as ostrich, secretary bird and other northern savannah birds.
Kidepo’s conservation story also changed significantly in 2026.
On 17 March 2026 Uganda Wildlife Authority announced the beginning of a southern white rhino reintroduction programme. The first two rhinos were moved from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary as part of a planned total of eight animals. UWA said the rhinos were initially placed in a secure sanctuary within the park for close monitoring.
This is an important conservation development but travellers should not automatically assume that rhino viewing is currently part of a normal Kidepo game drive. The animals are undergoing a managed reintroduction and monitoring programme.
Photographers should think beyond room quality.
A lodge with a clear view across Narus Valley can provide useful opportunities for landscape photography and wildlife observation. More importantly the lodge’s position can influence how quickly you reach productive areas at first light.
For wildlife photography:
Kidepo’s wide landscapes are also part of the photographic appeal. A lens suitable for landscapes can be just as valuable as a long telephoto.
A low room rate may look attractive until you add park fees, transfers, meals and game-drive costs.
Compare the total safari package rather than the accommodation price alone.
Several properties marketed as Kidepo lodges are actually outside the park boundary.
This is not necessarily a disadvantage. However it affects park access and the logistics of early morning or evening activities.
Kidepo has several access points. A lodge near Kalokudo is not automatically the best base for every activity.
Your safari operator should match the lodge location with the game-drive circuit and planned cultural or hiking activities.
Kidepo has excellent wildlife potential but no responsible safari company can guarantee a particular animal on a particular drive.
Even in the dry season animals move across a large landscape.
Kidepo has limited accommodation inventory. If your preferred lodge is full there may be few comparable alternatives.
Kidepo is remote. Road conditions, weather and vehicle requirements can influence travel time.
If you are driving then build flexibility into the itinerary rather than scheduling a short arrival window immediately before an important activity.

For luxury travellers Apoka Safari Lodge remains the strongest choice because it is inside the park and overlooks the Narus Valley. Travellers seeking better value should consider Kidepo Savannah Lodge while those interested in community conservation can consider Namoni Lodge.
Yes. Apoka Safari Lodge is located inside Kidepo Valley National Park in the Apoka area overlooking the Narus Valley.
Apoka Rest Camp is the main budget-oriented accommodation option inside the park. For a more comfortable stay outside the boundary, Kidepo Savannah Lodge offers self-contained accommodation alongside simpler tents.
No. It is located close to Kalokudo Gate outside the park boundary. The lodge states that it is approximately 500 metres from the gate.
Yes. Several lodges outside the park organize or can arrange game drives. You still need to pay the applicable UWA park fees and activity charges.
For a first visit we generally recommend three nights. This gives you time for multiple game drives and allows room for a cultural experience or nature activity without making the trip feel rushed.
Two nights can work for a fly-in safari but three or four nights is preferable for travellers who have made the long journey to northern Uganda.
Yes. UWA records more than 475 bird species in the park. The dry-country birdlife is one of Kidepo’s major attractions with species such as ostrich, secretary bird, Karamoja apalis and black-breasted barbet among the notable possibilities.
Yes. Apoka Safari Lodge is the established luxury option inside the park while Kidepo Wilderness Lodge provides a newer premium accommodation option close to the park boundary.
It depends on the property and package. Some luxury rates include scheduled activities while other lodges charge separately for vehicles, guides and park fees. Always request a detailed quotation showing exactly what is included.
For travellers who value remote landscapes, low visitor density and distinctive wildlife the answer is generally yes. Kidepo is not the easiest Ugandan park to reach but that remoteness is part of its character.
The best lodge is therefore not necessarily the most luxurious one. It is the property that gives you the right balance of location, safari time, comfort and total cost for the way you want to experience Kidepo.
