Rwanda offers one of East Africa’s most rewarding chimpanzee trekking experiences in Nyungwe National Park. The experience takes place in a cool montane rainforest where chimpanzees move through dense vegetation and spend much of their time in the forest canopy.
Unlike gorilla trekking where gorillas often remain on the ground for long periods, chimpanzee tracking can be more dynamic. You may hear chimpanzees calling before you see them. Once you find them, they can move quickly through trees or disappear into thick vegetation.
For travellers planning a Rwanda safari, chimpanzee trekking works especially well as part of a wider itinerary that includes Nyungwe, Lake Kivu, Kigali, Akagera National Park or Volcanoes National Park.
Nyungwe National Park is the main destination for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda. The park protects about 1,019 square kilometres of forest and forms part of the Albertine Rift.
The forest supports chimpanzees alongside numerous other primates including L’Hoest’s monkeys, Ruwenzori black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys and other forest species.
Rwanda also has chimpanzees in Gishwati Forest. However, Nyungwe is the established destination for a dedicated chimpanzee tracking experience.
Within Nyungwe, chimpanzee tracking currently uses three semi-habituated chimpanzee communities:
Each tracking community is limited to a maximum of eight visitors per day. This limit helps manage visitor pressure while giving groups a better opportunity to follow the chimpanzees without creating excessive disturbance.
Chimpanzee trekking begins early because chimpanzees are active in the morning.
The current Nyungwe visitor information states that tracking starts at about 5:30 am. Your exact meeting point depends on the community being tracked and the arrangements for your booking.
After meeting the tracking team you enter the forest with guides and trackers. They use recent information about the chimpanzees to determine where the group is likely to be.
The walk can take anywhere from about an hour to several hours. The time depends largely on where the chimpanzees have moved and how difficult the terrain is.
Once you locate the chimpanzees you can spend a maximum of one hour with them.
This is important when planning your expectations. Chimpanzee trekking is not simply a short walk to a fixed viewing point. The animals move naturally through a large forest so the tracking experience changes from day to day.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe requires a reasonable level of fitness.
The forest is mountainous and the trails can be steep, slippery and muddy after rain. You may also need to walk off established paths in some situations when trackers follow the chimpanzees.
The difficulty therefore depends on several factors:
A traveller who regularly hikes should generally find the experience manageable. However, people who rarely walk long distances should prepare before the trip.
There is no fixed trekking distance because the chimpanzees determine the route.
The actual tracking experience can last from roughly one hour to several hours before the chimpanzees are located.
After you find them you are allowed a maximum of one hour with the group.
Because the tracking time is unpredictable, avoid scheduling an important activity immediately after the trek. Allow plenty of time for the forest experience, return walk and transfer back to your accommodation.
For the 2025/2026 rate period, the published Nyungwe pricing schedule lists chimpanzee tracking at:
| Visitor category | Chimpanzee tracking |
|---|---|
| International and African visitor | US$150 per person |
| International visitor resident in Rwanda/EAC | US$75 per person |
| Rwanda/EAC citizen | RWF25,000 per person |
The published rate includes the services of a guide. The same schedule states that chimpanzee tracking has a maximum of eight adults per community and does not allow children under 15 years.
Nyungwe also offers a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. For 2025/2026 the published rate is US$200 for international and African visitors. The experience is limited to a maximum of four adults and also excludes children under 15.
These rates are subject to change. Therefore, confirm the current price and availability when booking your safari rather than relying on an old quotation found online.
These are different experiences and should not be confused.
| Feature | Chimpanzee tracking | Chimpanzee habituation |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Find and observe chimpanzees | Spend longer learning about a chimpanzee community as it becomes accustomed to people |
| 2025/2026 international rate | US$150 | US$200 |
| Maximum group size | 8 adults | 4 adults |
| Minimum age | 15 years | 15 years |
| Best suited to | Most safari travellers | Travellers seeking a more specialised primate experience |
For most visitors, regular chimpanzee tracking is sufficient. The habituation experience makes more sense for travellers with a strong interest in primatology, photography, research or extended wildlife observation.
Chimpanzee trekking is available throughout the year. Nyungwe is a rainforest so rain remains possible even during periods that are generally considered drier.
For practical safari planning, the drier periods can make forest walking easier. However, the rainy periods also have advantages because the forest remains lush and wildlife activity can be rewarding.
Rather than choosing dates based only on rainfall, consider the type of safari you want.
Drier conditions can make trails more comfortable and reduce the likelihood of very muddy sections.
These periods can suit travellers who want to combine chimpanzee trekking with hiking, the canopy walkway and other outdoor activities.
However, dry does not mean rain-free in Nyungwe.
Rain can make trails slippery and more challenging. At the same time, Nyungwe’s rainforest environment naturally receives substantial rainfall throughout the year.
If you travel during wetter months:
For travellers combining Nyungwe with gorilla trekking or other destinations, the best dates should be selected around the entire safari rather than chimpanzee trekking alone.
Chimpanzees are the main attraction but they are not the only reason to visit Nyungwe.
The park contains one of Rwanda’s richest concentrations of primates. Other species include:
Nyungwe also supports a large variety of birds and forest wildlife.
However, a chimpanzee trekking permit should not be viewed as a guarantee of seeing every species listed above. Forest wildlife moves freely and sightings depend on location, weather, vegetation and animal behaviour.
One of the most important things to understand is that chimpanzees are not always easy to see clearly.
You may hear loud calls coming through the forest before locating the group. Once you find them they may remain high in the trees or move rapidly from one location to another.
This creates a very different experience from watching wildlife in an open savannah.
You should expect:
Sightings are not guaranteed. Experienced trackers improve your chances by monitoring the chimpanzee communities and following their movements but wildlife remains unpredictable.
Nyungwe lies in south-western Rwanda close to the border with Burundi and not far from Lake Kivu.
The park is approximately 225 kilometres from Kigali by road. Current park information estimates a road journey of around five to six hours from Kigali depending on the route and road conditions.
Another option is to fly from Kigali to Kamembe Airport. From Kamembe the park can be reached by road.
For most travellers arriving through Kigali International Airport, the road journey is a practical option when Nyungwe is part of a longer Rwanda safari.
There are two main approaches.
Travelling by road gives you more flexibility to stop along the way and visit attractions outside Kigali.
It also allows you to build a broader itinerary around Nyungwe.
However, the journey is long. If you arrive in Rwanda after a long international flight, travelling directly from Kigali to Nyungwe can make the first day tiring.
For this reason, we generally recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the journey rather than treating the transfer as simply a race to reach the park.
Flying to Kamembe can significantly reduce the road travel required before reaching Nyungwe.
You will still need a road transfer from Kamembe to the relevant part of the park.
This option can suit travellers with limited time or those choosing a more comfortable itinerary.
Flight schedules can change, so confirm operating days and departure times before finalising your safari.
Accommodation location matters because chimpanzee tracking can begin very early.
Nyungwe currently offers several accommodation options connected with the park.
Gisakura is particularly useful for travellers interested in chimpanzee tracking in Cyamudongo.
The official Nyungwe information identifies Gisakura as a suitable base for chimpanzee trekking in Cyamudongo as well as hikes, waterfalls and tea experiences.
Gisakura Campsite provides basic facilities for travellers who prefer a lower-cost stay.
Uwinka is located at the park entrance and offers campsites and a guesthouse.
It is a useful base for travellers who want to combine chimpanzee trekking with other Nyungwe activities including hiking and the canopy walkway.
The Uwinka Guesthouse is self-catering and accommodates up to four guests.
Gisovu lies in the northern part of Nyungwe and provides guesthouse accommodation.
It is particularly relevant to travellers interested in the Gisovu chimpanzee community and the chimpanzee habituation experience.
The guesthouse is self-catering with food available through the nearby staff canteen.
Munazi Lodge is a newer eco-lodge option near the park.
It has nine A-frame cottages and a total capacity of 20 beds. The lodge provides a more comfortable option for travellers who want private accommodation rather than a campsite or self-catering guesthouse.
When choosing accommodation, do not select a lodge only because of its price. Consider its distance from your chimpanzee tracking meeting point and the early start time.
A minimum of two nights in the Nyungwe area is practical for most travellers.
One night can work if your itinerary is tightly organised around a single tracking activity. However, it leaves little room for delays, weather changes or additional experiences.
A two- or three-night stay gives you more flexibility.
You can combine chimpanzee trekking with:
For a wider Rwanda safari, Nyungwe can be combined with Volcanoes National Park and Akagera National Park.
Yes. This is one of the most useful ways to structure a Rwanda primate safari.
Chimpanzee trekking takes place in Nyungwe in the south-west while gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park in the north-west.
Because the two parks are separated by a substantial road journey, avoid trying to squeeze both activities into an overly short itinerary.
A more comfortable plan is to allow several days for the two regions and use the journey between them as part of the safari.
This combination also gives you two very different great-ape experiences. Chimpanzees are highly mobile and often use the forest canopy while mountain gorillas usually provide a more ground-based forest encounter.
Yes. A Rwanda-Uganda itinerary can be especially useful for travellers who want to experience different landscapes and primate destinations in the region.
A combined itinerary can include Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park followed by Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
However, border arrangements, road conditions, permit availability and the amount of time required for transfers should be checked before confirming the itinerary.
For travellers interested in both Rwanda and Uganda, working with a local safari operator can simplify the planning because permits, transport, accommodation and border logistics need to fit together.
Pack for wet forest conditions rather than assuming that Rwanda’s generally pleasant climate means you will stay dry.
Essential items include:
Choose clothing that dries reasonably quickly. Cotton can become uncomfortable when it gets wet and stays damp for a long time.
Wear practical forest clothing rather than safari fashion.
Long trousers and long sleeves provide useful protection against vegetation and insects. Neutral or natural colours are also sensible for wildlife viewing.
Your footwear matters more than appearance.
Choose boots with:
The trails can become muddy and slippery after rain so worn-out trainers are not ideal for a serious forest trek.
Chimpanzee photography can be challenging because the animals often move through dense vegetation and high branches.
A camera with a reasonable telephoto reach is useful. A lens around the 200–400mm range can be particularly practical for distant canopy subjects although your exact choice depends on your equipment.
You should also:
Do not sacrifice the experience simply to obtain one photograph. Chimpanzees can move quickly and a moment can disappear while you are adjusting camera settings.
Chimpanzees are wild animals even when they are habituated to the presence of people.
Follow the instructions of your guide and trackers throughout the experience.
Responsible visitors should:
If you are sick before trekking, inform your safari operator and park authorities. Great apes can be vulnerable to human respiratory illnesses so health precautions are an important part of responsible primate tourism.
Your visit contributes to the wider tourism economy that supports Nyungwe.
African Parks has managed Nyungwe in partnership with the Rwandan government since 2020 under a long-term management agreement. Current conservation work includes wildlife monitoring, camera trapping and daily monitoring of chimpanzee and colobus populations.
Tourism therefore forms part of a wider system that combines conservation with community and economic development.
Visitors also support conservation more directly when they use official park services and follow park rules.
The canopy walkway is one of the easiest activities to add to a Nyungwe itinerary.
The walkway rises above the forest and provides a different perspective of the ecosystem. Instead of looking through the vegetation from the forest floor you can view the canopy from above.
The current Visit Rwanda information lists the walkway at 160 metres long and about 70 metres above the ground.
It is accessed through a guided forest trail from the Uwinka area.
Because chimpanzee trekking starts early, the canopy walkway can work well as a later activity if your energy levels allow it.
A longer stay allows you to experience more than chimpanzees.
Popular options include:
The best combination depends on your interests. Birdwatchers may prefer additional forest time while active travellers may want hiking and canopy activities.
Chimpanzee tracking has a minimum age of 15 years under the current 2025/2026 Nyungwe pricing information.
This means families travelling with younger children should plan alternative activities in Nyungwe.
Always confirm the applicable age rules at the time of booking because park regulations and activity policies can change.
International travellers should check Rwanda’s current immigration requirements before departure.
Rwanda allows citizens of all countries to obtain visas on arrival. The current immigration guidance states that travellers should have a genuine acceptable travel document valid for at least six months.
Visa eligibility and fees vary according to nationality. Rwanda’s immigration authority currently lists a standard visitor visa at US$50 for a single entry and US$70 for multiple entries for travellers who are not covered by visa-waiver arrangements.
Citizens of East African Community member states receive entry passes or visas free of charge under the applicable arrangements.
If your safari includes Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa may also be relevant. Rwanda’s immigration authority lists it at US$100 with multiple entry validity for tourism within the participating countries.
Check the official immigration requirements before travelling because entry and health regulations can change.
Chimpanzee tracking has limited daily capacity. Waiting until the last minute can create unnecessary problems during busy travel periods.
Book the tracking activity before finalising the rest of your itinerary.
Chimpanzees spend significant time in trees and can move quickly through the canopy.
Bring binoculars and prepare for variable viewing conditions.
Nyungwe is not a flat forest. Slopes, mud and wet vegetation can make the walk more demanding than expected.
Prepare physically and wear proper footwear.
Tracking times vary. The chimpanzees may be farther away than expected and the return walk can take time.
Leave a buffer between trekking and flights or long transfers.
Heavy cotton clothing becomes uncomfortable when wet.
Use lightweight layers and proper rain protection instead.
A chimpanzee permit gives you access to the tracking experience. It does not guarantee that the animals will provide a particular view or remain in one place.
Keep expectations realistic.
Nyungwe is large and chimpanzee communities are spread across different areas.
Your accommodation should match the community and meeting point planned for your trek whenever possible.
The chimpanzee permit is only one part of the total safari cost.
Your final price can also include:
Budget travellers can reduce costs by choosing simpler accommodation and focusing on one or two main activities.
Mid-range travellers can combine comfortable accommodation with private transport and several forest activities.
Luxury travellers can use premium accommodation and flights to reduce long road transfers while building a more personalised itinerary.
Because accommodation and transport prices vary by season and service level, it is better to request a safari quotation based on your actual dates rather than relying on a single generic trip price.
Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe
Travel from Kigali to Nyungwe with suitable stops along the route. Overnight near the park.
Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking
Start early for chimpanzee tracking. Add the canopy walkway or another forest activity if time and energy permit.
Day 3: Nyungwe to Kigali or onward to another destination
Return to Kigali or continue your Rwanda itinerary.
Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe
2: Chimpanzee trekking
3: Canopy walkway and forest activity
4: Nyungwe to Kigali or onward to Lake Kivu
This option provides more breathing room and works well for travellers who want more than a single morning trek.
A longer itinerary can combine:
Another variation can include Akagera National Park for savannah wildlife before or after the forest destinations.
The exact order should depend on permit availability and flight or road schedules.
The main chimpanzee trekking destination is Nyungwe National Park. Rwanda also has chimpanzees in Gishwati Forest but Nyungwe is the established destination for dedicated chimpanzee tracking.
For the published 2025/2026 Nyungwe rates, international and African visitors pay US$150 per person for chimpanzee tracking. International visitors resident in Rwanda or the EAC pay US$75 while Rwanda/EAC citizens pay RWF25,000.
Tracking currently starts at about 5:30 am. Your exact reporting arrangements depend on the chimpanzee community and booking.
Tracking can take from about one hour to several hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located. Once the chimpanzees are found visitors can spend a maximum of one hour with them.
It can be moderately demanding because Nyungwe is mountainous and forest trails can become muddy and slippery. Fitness and suitable footwear make a significant difference.
No. Chimpanzees are wild animals that move through the forest. Trackers use current information to locate them but sightings and viewing conditions cannot be guaranteed.
The current 2025/2026 Nyungwe pricing information states that children under 15 are not permitted for chimpanzee tracking or the chimpanzee habituation experience.
Yes. Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park can be combined in one itinerary. Because they are in different parts of Rwanda you should allow enough time for transfers between the two destinations.
Two nights is a practical starting point for most travellers. Three nights is better if you want chimpanzee trekking plus the canopy walkway, hiking, birding or another forest activity.
Bring waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long sleeves, insect repellent, binoculars, drinking water and camera protection. A small backpack is more practical than a large suitcase during the trek.
Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is best planned as part of a complete Nyungwe experience rather than as an isolated activity.
The most important decisions are the chimpanzee community you will track, your accommodation location, the date of your permit, your transport arrangements and the amount of time you leave around the trek.
For a first visit, we recommend allowing at least two nights around Nyungwe. This gives you enough flexibility to experience the forest without turning the safari into a rushed transfer between destinations.
At Noble Gorilla Adventures, we can help organise Rwanda chimpanzee trekking together with accommodation, private transport and other Rwanda or Uganda safari experiences. The itinerary can then be adjusted around your travel dates, budget, interests and preferred accommodation level.
