Choosing where to stay in Nyungwe National Park depends largely on the experience you want. Nyungwe is a large mountainous rainforest rather than a compact safari park. Therefore, the location of your accommodation can affect your early-morning chimpanzee trek, canopy walk, hiking plans and the amount of time you spend on the road.
Today, travellers have several choices ranging from a luxury rainforest resort and an eco-lodge to park-managed accommodation, campsites and simple guesthouses. The best option is not necessarily the most expensive one. Instead, it should match your planned activities, route and budget.
Nyungwe covers about 1,019 square kilometres and protects one of Rwanda’s most important rainforest ecosystems. The park is home to 13 primate species along with hundreds of bird species and a wide range of other wildlife. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For most safari itineraries, we recommend choosing your accommodation based on where your main activity starts rather than simply looking for the highest-rated hotel.

The park’s current accommodation list includes Munazi Lodge, Uwinka Campsites, Uwinka Guesthouse, Gisakura Campsite and Gisovu Guesthouse.
The property formerly known as One&Only Nyungwe House now operates as Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort. The change is a branding change rather than a change in ownership, management or service quality according to the resort. It sits on a working tea plantation on the edge of Nyungwe National Park.
This is the accommodation to consider if your priority is comfort, privacy and a polished rainforest experience.
The resort offers accommodation including forest-view villas and a canopy treehouse. Its current accommodation information lists features such as private balconies, en-suite bathrooms and forest views.
Meals are also an important part of the package. The resort currently lists breakfast, lunch and dinner among its inclusions for its accommodation packages. Selected activities are also included depending on the package and current conditions.
Best suited to:
The main consideration is cost. This is not the accommodation we would normally suggest to someone whose priority is keeping the overall safari budget low.
Munazi Lodge is one of the newer accommodation options in Nyungwe. It opened as part of the park’s expansion of tourism infrastructure and is operated within the park’s conservation-focused tourism system.
The lodge has nine A-frame cottages including one Executive A-frame and provides 20 beds. The cabins sit above the forest floor and use reclaimed exotic wood as part of the lodge’s sustainability approach.
Its location is particularly useful for road-based itineraries. Munazi is about 1.2 kilometres from the Kigali–Rusizi highway near Pindura. That makes it easier to combine a Nyungwe stay with a road trip through southwestern Rwanda.
The published 2025/2026 rates currently show international and African guests paying from US$185 per person sharing in low season for a standard A-frame to US$230 in high season. Executive A-frames are listed from US$220 to US$270 per person sharing. Rwanda, EAC and resident rates are lower. The rates include accommodation, meals, soda and water but exclude park fees and transport.
Because accommodation rates can change, confirm the current rate when booking.
Best suited to:
Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel sits on a hill above the surrounding tea plantations and forest. The property has traditionally been used by visitors exploring the Nyungwe area and remains a practical option for travellers who want more comfort than basic park accommodation.
The hotel’s current information describes 12 cottages with double or twin beds. The rooms include sitting areas, fireplaces and balconies facing the surrounding landscape.
The hilltop position is one of its main advantages. On clear days, views can extend across the surrounding landscape toward Lake Kivu. However, remember that mountain weather can change quickly. A view that looks impressive at check-in may disappear into mist later in the afternoon.
Best suited to:
Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge is located in the Kitabi area on the edge of Nyungwe. The property currently offers deluxe tented rooms and more conventional lodge rooms. Its accommodation information lists private bathrooms, hot showers and terraces or balconies with views over the surrounding hills and tea fields.
This location can work well for travellers approaching Nyungwe from the Kigali side who want to break the journey before continuing deeper into the forest.
It is particularly suitable for travellers who value a quieter setting and a balance between comfort and an eco-lodge atmosphere.
Best suited to:
Kitabi Eco Centre is useful for travellers who want to control accommodation costs while still staying close to Nyungwe.
The centre combines accommodation with camping and community-oriented activities. Its published accommodation information includes a traditional King’s Palace replica as well as camping. The property’s current published rates list the palace at US$50 per person per night while camping with your own equipment is listed at US$15 per person per night. Rental camping equipment is also available at additional cost.
These published rates should be confirmed directly before booking because accommodation prices can change.
Kitabi is especially interesting for travellers who want a more local and simple experience rather than a conventional safari lodge.
Best suited to:
Uwinka is one of the most useful locations for travellers who want to spend more time around the central part of Nyungwe.
The park currently lists the Uwinka Guesthouse as a two-room self-catering property for up to four guests. It sits beside the Uwinka campsites and within the forest environment.
This is a very different experience from staying at a luxury lodge. You should choose it because of its location and simplicity rather than expecting hotel-style services.
Uwinka can be particularly useful for hikers, birdwatchers and travellers who want an early start for activities based around the visitor centre.
The park operates campsites at Uwinka. The current park information describes two secluded campsites with views toward Lake Kivu and the surrounding valleys and hills.
Camping gives you a closer connection to the forest. However, it also requires more preparation. Nights can feel cool at Nyungwe’s altitude and rain can arrive even when the weather looked promising earlier in the day.
Bring suitable rain protection, warm layers and a reliable waterproof bag for electronics.
Camping is best for travellers who enjoy nature and do not mind giving up some comfort to stay closer to the forest.
Gisakura Campsite is located in the western corridor of Nyungwe. The park describes it as being surrounded by tall trees and tea plantations.
This location can be convenient when your itinerary includes activities around Gisakura or when you are travelling toward Rusizi and Kamembe.
The western location also makes it easier to combine Nyungwe with a continuation toward Lake Kivu or Rusizi rather than returning immediately toward Kigali.
Gisovu Guesthouse provides self-catering accommodation in the northern part of Nyungwe. The park describes it as overlooking Lake Kivu and Muzimu mountain.
This option makes the most sense when your itinerary specifically includes northern Nyungwe activities or a longer hiking route. It is less convenient if your main objective is simply to complete a short chimpanzee trek and canopy walk.
Travellers on tighter budgets can also stay in the Gisakura area outside the main luxury properties.
Gisakura Family Hostel is one example of budget accommodation reported in the area. Current listings describe simple rooms and basic hotel facilities.
The important point is to confirm the exact location and current operating status before booking. Accommodation listings around Nyungwe can change more quickly than the major park-managed properties.
For a safari where timing matters, we prefer to confirm the accommodation directly rather than relying only on an old online listing.
Nyungwe is large enough that location matters.
A common mistake is to book accommodation based only on price or photographs without checking where the day’s activity begins. A property that looks close on a map may still require additional driving because of the forest’s mountainous terrain.
Gisakura is particularly useful for travellers planning activities around the western side of Nyungwe.
It can also work well for travellers entering or leaving through the western side of the park.
If your itinerary includes chimpanzee tracking, confirm the community and meeting point before choosing your accommodation. Nyungwe currently has several chimpanzee communities including Cyamudongo, Mayebe and Gisovu. The park notes that each community has a maximum of eight visitors per day.
Uwinka is a useful base for travellers who want to combine the canopy walkway with forest trails, birding and other activities.
The canopy walkway is accessed from the Igishigishigi trail and can also be incorporated into the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails. The current Visit Rwanda information lists the walkway at 160 metres long and 70 metres above the ground.
The forest paths can become muddy after rain. Therefore, staying closer to your activity area can make an early start much easier.
Kitabi works well when you want to reduce accommodation costs and are comfortable with simpler facilities.
It can also be useful as part of a road itinerary from Kigali before continuing deeper into Nyungwe.
Munazi Lodge offers an attractive middle ground between a basic campsite and a high-end resort. Its location near the Kigali–Rusizi highway also makes it practical for travellers who are driving through the region.
For chimpanzee trekking, do not choose accommodation based only on the words “near Nyungwe.”
Instead, confirm three things before paying a deposit:
The answer can change which accommodation makes the most sense.
The park currently lists chimpanzee tracking from several accommodation bases including Uwinka Guesthouse, Uwinka Campsite, Gisakura Campsite and Gisovu Guesthouse.
Chimpanzee tracking also requires realistic expectations. Chimpanzees move through dense forest and sightings are not guaranteed. Your guide and trackers work to locate the animals but forest conditions can affect how quickly you find them.
If the canopy walkway is your main activity, look at accommodation around Uwinka first.
The walkway begins from the Uwinka area and the guided experience involves walking through the forest before reaching the suspension bridge. The current official information recommends suitable footwear and a lightweight raincoat because the forest paths can become muddy after rainfall.
The canopy walkway is not simply a viewpoint. You still need to walk through a mountainous forest environment to reach it. Therefore, good footwear matters more than fashionable safari clothing.
Nyungwe is an important destination for birdwatchers. Current park information records more than 300 bird species while African Parks reports 345 recorded bird species.
For serious birding, consider staying longer rather than trying to fit birding into a single rushed day.
Uwinka and other park-based accommodation can be useful for early starts. However, a knowledgeable birding guide can make a bigger difference than the category of your lodge.
Bring:
Forest bird photography is challenging because vegetation can block the subject and low light can make fast shutter speeds difficult.
Hikers should think about access rather than luxury.
Nyungwe has an extensive network of trails. The park currently lists several hiking opportunities beginning around Uwinka and Gisakura. Longer multi-day routes also have dedicated campsites.
If hiking is central to your trip, staying within or very close to the park can reduce unnecessary transfers.
For a short safari, however, you may not need several nights in the forest. One or two well-planned nights can be enough to combine a primate experience with a canopy walk or shorter nature trail.
For a honeymoon, the accommodation itself becomes part of the trip.
Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort is designed for this type of stay. Its current accommodation includes forest-view villas and a canopy treehouse while the resort offers dining and nature-focused experiences within the property.
Munazi Lodge is another option for couples who prefer an eco-lodge atmosphere and do not need the full-service luxury of a high-end resort.
For couples travelling on a tighter budget, a comfortable guesthouse can still work well if the safari itinerary is the main focus.
A lower accommodation budget does not mean you have to skip Nyungwe.
Consider:
Park-managed accommodation can be especially useful because it places you closer to the activities you are travelling to experience. The current park booking system allows visitors to request accommodation at Uwinka Campsites, Uwinka Guesthouse, Gisakura Campsite, Gisovu Guesthouse and Munazi Lodge.
However, basic accommodation requires more independence. Check whether bedding, meals, cooking facilities and transport are included before you confirm the booking.
For most first-time visitors, two nights is a practical starting point.
That gives you enough time to combine activities without turning the trip into a race.
A typical plan could look like this:
Day 1: Travel from Kigali toward Nyungwe and check in.
2: Early chimpanzee trekking followed by the canopy walkway or a shorter forest activity.
3: Morning birding, nature walk or another activity before continuing toward Lake Kivu, Rusizi or back toward Kigali.
If chimpanzee habituation, serious birding or multi-day hiking is your priority, plan additional nights.
The current park programme includes chimpanzee habituation, specialised birding, night walks, guided hikes, colobus tracking and longer trails.
Nyungwe is a substantial journey from Kigali.
The official Nyungwe visitor information currently puts the park at approximately 225 kilometres from Kigali and estimates a 6–7 hour drive depending on the route and conditions. The main road options include the Kigali–Huye–Rusizi route and the Kigali–Karongi–Rusizi route.
For this reason, we do not recommend planning an important morning activity immediately after leaving Kigali unless your itinerary has been carefully arranged.
A road safari gives you the advantage of seeing more of Rwanda’s changing landscape. However, the journey takes time.
Kamembe Airport is the nearest airport for travellers arriving by air.
The official Nyungwe information says the park is approximately 45 kilometres from Kamembe to Gisakura Gate and estimates about one hour by road from Kamembe to Nyungwe.
This can make flying to Kamembe useful for travellers who want to reduce road travel.
You should still arrange your ground transfer in advance. Do not assume that transport will automatically be available when you land.
Accommodation should be planned together with activities and transport.
For example, a traveller staying near Gisakura can structure the trip around western Nyungwe activities. Someone staying at Uwinka can focus more easily on canopy and central forest experiences. A traveller using Munazi may prefer a comfortable base close to the main road while exploring selected activities during the day.
This is why a good safari itinerary should be planned as a complete route rather than as separate hotel and activity bookings.
At Noble Gorilla Adventures, we recommend confirming the following before finalising accommodation:
Nyungwe is a rainforest destination so you should expect some rain throughout the year.
Rain does not necessarily mean you should cancel your trip. In fact, the wet environment is part of what makes the forest so lush.
The main consideration is how much rain you are comfortable with.
This period generally has wetter conditions. Forest trails can become muddy and photography can become more challenging.
The advantage is that the rainforest can look especially lush.
These months can offer useful conditions for travellers who prefer a relatively drier period. Nevertheless, Nyungwe can still receive rain because it is a high-altitude rainforest.
Accommodation should be booked earlier if your travel dates coincide with a busy period.
Rainfall varies during this period and conditions can change quickly. December and January can be useful for travellers combining Nyungwe with other parts of Rwanda but your exact experience will depend on weather and trail conditions.
Rather than choosing accommodation solely because of the season, select a property that makes your planned activities easy to reach.
Your packing list should reflect the rainforest environment.
Bring:
For camping, add appropriate sleeping equipment if it is not supplied by the campsite.
For photography, use waterproof protection even when the forecast looks dry. Rain can develop quickly in the mountains.
Nyungwe offers excellent photographic opportunities but rainforest photography requires patience.
Light can be low beneath the canopy even during the middle of the day. Therefore, a camera with good low-light performance can be useful.
For wildlife photography:
For the canopy walkway, wider lenses are useful for showing the scale of the forest and surrounding hills.
The cheapest room may not save money if it creates long transfers every morning.
Nyungwe is a large mountainous forest. Always check the activity meeting point.
Some park accommodation is self-catering. Confirm whether you need to bring food or arrange meals separately.
Chimpanzee activities have controlled visitor numbers. The park currently limits each listed chimpanzee community to eight visitors per day.
Uwinka and other park facilities are valuable because of their location. They should not be compared directly with a luxury rainforest resort.
Nyungwe is not a quick side trip from Kigali. Allow enough time for the journey and avoid scheduling a critical activity immediately after a long road transfer. The official park information currently estimates 6–7 hours by road from Kigali.
Rain can affect trails and visibility. Pack accordingly even during months that are generally considered drier.
Both options can work.
Stay inside or in park-managed accommodation if:
Stay outside the park if:
There is no single accommodation that suits every traveller.
The most practical choice depends on what you plan to do each day.
| Traveller | Accommodation area to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury traveller | Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort | High-end comfort and forest setting |
| Eco-conscious traveller | Munazi Lodge | Park-based eco accommodation |
| Mid-range traveller | Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel | Comfortable rooms and scenic location |
| Budget traveller | Kitabi Eco Centre or selected guesthouse | Lower-cost accommodation |
| Camper | Uwinka or Gisakura campsite | Closer connection to the forest |
| Hiker | Uwinka or Gisovu | Useful access to forest trails |
| Birdwatcher | Uwinka or another park-based option | Easier access to early starts |
| Honeymoon couple | Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort | Privacy and luxury |
| Family | Munazi or a suitable private lodge | More comfortable base for a multi-day stay |
| Self-drive traveller | Accommodation near the main road | Easier route planning |
Nyungwe works particularly well as part of a wider Rwanda safari rather than as an isolated hotel stay.
A well-planned itinerary can combine chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway, forest hiking and birding before continuing to Lake Kivu or another part of Rwanda.
For travellers coming from Uganda, Nyungwe can also form part of a broader East African primate itinerary. The important point is to build the route around driving times, activity schedules and accommodation location.
We can help arrange the accommodation, transport, permits and activities around your preferred budget and travel dates.
There is no single best area for every traveller. Uwinka is useful for central forest activities while Gisakura works well for western Nyungwe. Kitabi is practical for budget-oriented itineraries and Munazi provides a comfortable park-based option.
Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort is the area’s high-end rainforest resort. It sits on a working tea plantation on the edge of Nyungwe and offers luxury accommodation with forest and tea-estate surroundings.
Choose accommodation based on the chimpanzee community and trekking meeting point assigned to your booking. Park-managed accommodation at Gisakura, Uwinka and Gisovu can be useful depending on the activity location.
Yes. The park currently lists campsites at Uwinka and Gisakura among its accommodation options.
Munazi Lodge is a park-managed eco-lodge located about 1.2 kilometres off the Kigali–Rusizi highway near Pindura within the Nyungwe area.
The official Nyungwe visitor information currently gives an approximate distance of 225 kilometres from Kigali and estimates 6–7 hours by road. Actual journey time depends on the route, traffic, stops and road conditions.
Yes. Several accommodation options operate around Kitabi, Gisakura and other nearby areas. Staying outside the park can provide more choice for travellers who want particular facilities or a lower accommodation budget.
Two nights is a practical starting point for a first visit because it allows time for a major activity and another forest experience. Serious birdwatchers, hikers and travellers doing chimpanzee habituation should consider staying longer.
Yes. It is better to coordinate accommodation with your confirmed activity date and meeting point. This prevents a situation where you have a room but must make an unnecessarily long transfer before an early morning trek.
Nyungwe is particularly suitable for travellers interested in primates, rainforest, birding, hiking and conservation. It is not a traditional open-savanna game-drive destination. The main experiences are forest-based and require walking or guided activities.
The best place to stay in Nyungwe depends on the safari you want to have.
Choose Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort if luxury and privacy are central to your trip. Choose Munazi Lodge if you want comfortable eco-accommodation within the park’s tourism system. Consider Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel or Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge for a comfortable mid-range stay. For lower budgets, Kitabi Eco Centre, Uwinka Guesthouse and the park campsites can provide practical alternatives.
Most importantly, book the accommodation together with your Nyungwe activities. The forest is large and mountainous so a few kilometres on a map do not always tell you how convenient a property will be for an early morning trek.
